Every one doesn’t know how many seconds it may take to gaze around by these curious mountain gorillas, but there’s the exhilarating and humbling feeling of recognition –of mountain gorilla, one of around just 700 in the world, looking at inscrutably these close sisters to humans .because of their interesting characters
Though they live in the tree canopy a mother patiently tries to feed her infant, a fidgeting black bundle of new fur, as it wriggled this way and that occasionally flinging out a small arm to paw at her back or a nearby branch.
Then the giant frame of an adult male, a majestic silverback, crashed through anything in its way before he too came to rest not far from where we stood.
I sat regally in a clearing of its own making - not for gorillas the need for guides with machetes to hack a path through the tripwire vines, ferns and dead trees of the steep mountainside - shoveling his food into giant jaws as nonchalant as a 28 stone beast can be.
Sharing 95 per cent of human's DNA, the actions of these placid animals as they fed were recognizable, at times, reminiscent of ourselves, not least that there can sometimes be little time for pleasantries when there's eating to be done.
Though groups to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park are allowed just an hour per day with the gorillas and visiting these endangered animals is one of Uganda's undoubted highlights.
I'd gone to sleep in my lodgings in the valley below amidst a cacophony of sounds from the local orchestra. As the central African sun slept the forest remained very much awake and the constant chirrup of crickets was only interrupted by a birds' chorus of muffled machine gun rat-a-tat-tat conversations.
The Uganda Wildlife Authority are admirable in their management of their habitats, as they attempt to balance responsible tourism with the demands of protecting and nurturing the mountain gorillas in its attempt to enhance conservation as this has been done through establishing the currying capacity concept to the gorilla trekkers as they are only restricted to 8 paxs per day per group where it almost offers 4diferent groups of gorillas groups which include Mubale, Rushegula, Habinyangi and Nkuringo.
These docile but endangered animals may be the most enticing of the country's abundant wildlife but traditional Gorilla Permit Information
Gorilla permits currently cost US$500 per person and can be bought through tour operators or the Uganda Wildlife Authority. From 1st July 2007, the cost increased from 375 US$ to US$500. and coming next year the park entrance fees have been raised from 25 per person to UD$ 30 per day per person See www.uwa.or.ug for 'Gorilla Rules'.
